If you are pursuing a career in social care within the Republic of Ireland, understanding CORU registration is one of the most important steps in your professional journey.
As the statutory regulator for health and social care professionals, CORU helps ensure high standards of care and professional practice across the sector.
Why CORU Registration Matters
The title “Social Care Worker” is a legally protected designation in Ireland. To practice legally under this title, registration with CORU is mandatory for practitioners working across residential and social care settings.
At Solis GMC, we want future team members to be fully informed, prepared, and supported throughout the registration process. Below is a straightforward guide to help you understand the requirements.
Step 1: Identify Your Registration Route
Depending on your qualifications and professional experience, there are two main registration pathways available.
The Standard Route (Section 38)
This route is designed for recent graduates or applicants who hold a CORU-approved qualification, typically an approved Level 7 Social Care degree or equivalent from a recognised institution.
The Existing Practitioner Route (Section 91)
Experienced professionals who have actively practised in the field for at least two of the previous five years in Ireland may qualify through transitional arrangements.
This route allows registration through:
- Employer Opinion of Competence
- Assessment of Professional Competence (AoPC)
This pathway may be suitable for professionals whose qualifications pre-date current approved qualification lists.
Step 2: Gather Your Required Documentation
Before submitting your application through the CORU online portal, ensure you have certified copies of the following documents:
Proof of Identity
- Valid passport
- Driving licence
Qualifications
- Degree parchment
- Graduation certificate
- Academic transcripts
Proof of Professional Employment
For Section 91 applicants, employer verification forms confirming your professional practice history will be required.
Garda Vetting and Police Clearance
Applicants must complete the National Vetting Bureau process.
If you have lived outside Ireland or Northern Ireland for 12 consecutive months or longer after turning 18 years of age, you will also need certified police clearance certificates from those countries.
Statutory Declaration
A signed and witnessed declaration confirming your fitness to practise must be completed before a solicitor, Commissioner for Oaths, or Peace Commissioner.
Step 3: Submit Your Application and Pay the Fee
Once your profile has been created and all required documentation uploaded, you will:
- Complete health and conduct declarations
- Submit your application
- Pay the standard CORU application fee of €100
